Human remains were discovered near Castle Rock Park during a search for Katherine Schneider, a missing teen from Saratoga. The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office reported that the county medical examiner is investigating to determine the identity of the person located. Although the investigation is ongoing, an Instagram post by Nola Schneider, Katherine's mother, cites that the sheriff's office has informed the family that the found remains are those of their teenage daughter via NBC Bay Area.
Katherine Schneider, a 17-year-old from Saratoga, went missing from her home on July 5, 2023. The teen was last seen leaving her residence in a white 2019 Honda Accord. After she was reported missing, a search for Katherine commenced across three counties. Authorities later discovered her unoccupied car on Skyline Boulevard, near Castle Rock State Park, on August 7.
According to a statement the Schneider family shared on Instagram, the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office informed them that Katherine had died in a car accident. Her remains were found in a ravine close to Castle Rock State Park. In their post, the family expressed their sorrow and reiterated how much their beloved Katie would be missed, stating, "She taught us all how to live our biggest life without reservation." The post also conveyed that the circumstances surrounding the devastating incident are still being investigated.
Prior to finding Katherine's car, the teen's mysterious disappearance concerned her family—a month had gone by with no trace of her. On July 5, 2023, Katherine left her house without any money, identification, or her cell phone, and her family had been working closely with authorities in their efforts to locate her via Hoodline. Surveillance footage captured her car on Skyline Boulevard in Los Gatos shortly after her disappearance, showing an individual resembling Katherine stepping out of the vehicle and re-entering it a few moments later.
Although Katherine Schneider's story has reached a heartbreaking conclusion, the ongoing investigation now works to determine the circumstances that led to the tragic incident.
