In the quest to redefine the shoreline of San Diego, the city has unveiled three remarkable design concepts for the Ocean Beach Pier Renewal project. After the beloved pier's service life reached its conclusion in 2018, city officials opted for a bold and cost-effective solution: to construct a possible replacement with unique features, rather than renovating the existing structure. As public reception to the three options has been sought over the past six months, the city now unveils its preliminary designs to the community, encouraging input to shape the final concept of the storied landmark.

The first of the three design options presented is entitled "The Squint Test." This concept seeks to preserve elements of the pier's current layout, expanding the boardwalk and incorporating a reconstructed café with an additional fishing deck. The new building would house updated restrooms, potential retail space, and a community room, all carefully situated to maintain the historic and iconic silhouette of the pier as viewed from the land.

The second option, dubbed "The Remora," is showcased with a concept drawing that emphasizes the pier's original design. Featuring a shaded surfer lounge area, an enhanced junior lifeguard jump platform, an expanded deck for outdoor dining at the reconstructed historic café, integrated fishing amenities, and an enlarged plaza containing a small retail pavilion, "The Remora" is intended to celebrate the unique coastal experiences and activities central to the Ocean Beach community.

The final design proposal, "The Braid," takes a more abstract approach, reimagining the classic long, linear pier as a series of interconnected pathways that offer a distinct ocean experience for visitors. Through elevated and submersed viewing platforms, this sweeping vision promises a broader perspective of Southern California's mesmerizing shoreline, while also integrating potential retail, dining, and community spaces, lowered fishing areas, and enhanced restrooms into its unique curvilinear design.

As the city solicits public feedback on these three designs through an online survey open until October 9th, it is evident that the voices of San Diegans will play a vital role in shaping the final design concept for the Ocean Beach Pier. Echoing the importance of community engagement, Strategic Capital Projects Assistant Director Elif Cetin said in a release, "We need San Diegans to let us know what they like and don't like about these concepts, as their continued input will shape the final design concept that may end up becoming the next iconic structure in Ocean Beach."

As San Diegans weigh the merits of each proposed design, the city reminds residents that the final concept could incorporate elements of all three. Looking ahead to a revitalized Ocean Beach Pier, the city has secured $8.4 million through state funding for the renewal project and plans to pursue additional state and federal grants, according to FOX 5 San Diego.
