As the medical helicopter was called in to attend to those with serious injuries, traffic came to a standstill with both sides of the Massachusetts Turnpike closed in the Charlton area for a while. This aircraft response exacerbated the congestion, with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) posting details about traffic closure on social media, as reported by WCVB.
The incident occurred near Mile Marker 82.2, east of the eastbound Charlton rest area. The crash involved multiple vehicles, including, of course, the tractor-trailer that crossed the median.
The extent of the injuries sustained by those involved in the crash and the recovery efforts are still being assessed.
