San Diego Receives $45 Million to Boost Affordable HousingSource: San Diego Housing Commission

The State of California has awarded $45 million grant to San Diego for the creation of more than 1,180 affordable housing units in the city, according to Mayor Todd Gloria. The funding heavily targets low- and middle-income households and will be focused on Council Districts 3 and 8, as per the San Diego Housing Commission FB post.

Mayor Todd Gloria and the San Diego Housing Commission (SDHC) applied for and secured the grant through the state's Catalytic Infill Infrastructure program as reported by SDHC. San Diego successfully received the maximum amount available for large cities, showcasing the city's proactive approach to combating the housing crisis.

According to the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD), the grant will be utilized for site preparation, surface improvements, and residential parking for housing developments, among other infrastructure improvements. Transit investments will also be made, including new pathways, bus shelters, and bike facilities, contributing to a more sustainable and accessible environment.

The proposed developments include the Front Street project, consisting of two 40-story towers located in downtown San Diego, and the Palm City Transit Village and Transforming & Advancing South County Transit Communities (TASC) initiative, which covers three sites in South San Diego.

The Front Street project will create 1,007 total units with affordable options for varying income levels, while the Palm City Transit Village and TASC will introduce 586 total units, the majority of which will be affordable for households with 30% to 80% of San Diego's Area Median Income (AMI).

Developers such as The Michaels Organization, National Community Renaissance (National CORE), and Casa Familiar are already onboard to actively work on creating these new units and transforming the city's housing landscape.
