As of today, an evacuation route hardening project has commenced in Monte Sereno, affecting traffic along Highway 9.
According to a Facebook post from the Vasona Fire Fuels Crew, the project began today and is expected to run through October 19. The hardening efforts will take place on Highway 9, stretching from Austin Way to the Monte Sereno City Hall. Work is scheduled for Tuesdays through Thursdays from 10 am-2:30 pm.
The ongoing efforts along the highway are part of a larger emergency preparedness initiative aimed at reinforcing evacuation routes for times when local residents face potential danger from natural disasters, such as wildfires or severe weather events. This particular section of Highway 9 has been identified as a vital route in need of improvements to ensure the safety and effectiveness of evacuations in the area.
During the project's duration, one lane on the affected stretch of Highway 9 will be closed, possibly resulting in minor traffic disruptions. In an effort to minimize impacts on local commuters, the Vasona Fire Fuels Crew has ensured that they will not work during peak commute times.
As the work begins, motorists are urged to exercise caution and slow down in the work area, out of consideration for the safety of the crewmembers involved in this important, life-saving venture.
Residents of Monte Sereno and others regularly commuting through the area are encouraged to make note of this change to their travel routes and remain aware of any additional updates or schedule changes as the work progresses.
