San Jose's Winchester Mystery House is throwing open doors that stay shut during its regular daytime tours, offering a one-night-only Flashlight Tour on Friday, November 13, 2026. The self-guided evening walk lets visitors wander the mansion's eerie corridors with flashlight in hand, timed to land on the third and final Friday the 13th of the year.
The 160-room Victorian mansion, crafted by Sarah Winchester over 36 years from 1886 to 1922, already draws visitors to its regular Mansion Tour, which covers 110 of those rooms, according to the Winchester Mystery House. The Flashlight Tour goes further, granting what the attraction describes as special access to areas off-limits on the standard tour. Guests are free to roam the designated path at their own pace rather than following a guide, per the same source.
As NBC Los Angeles reports, the house's tour guides regularly point out where the number 13 turns up throughout the estate, and Sarah Winchester is said to have had an affinity for the number. That theme carries into the mansion's glasswork: stained-glass windows display 13 dots, while spiderweb designs also appear on windows.
What the Flashlight Tour Includes
Tickets for the November 13 Flashlight Tour run $49.99 for adults and $29.99 for children ages 5 to 12, with flashlights provided to every guest. Children younger than five are not permitted on the tour. The attraction notes that tickets are non-refundable, though rescheduling requests may be considered depending on availability.
Beyond the walk-through, the evening includes a screening of “Firsthand Hauntings: Stories from Mansion Caretakers,” a documentary built around caretakers' accounts of unexplained phenomena reported inside the house. It begins at 7 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom, with only 50 spots available for the screening.
A Disputed Legend Around the Number 13
Not everyone agrees on how much of the number-13 lore traces back to Sarah Winchester herself. A historian cited by 7x7 Bay Area has disputed the idea that she was personally obsessed with the number, arguing that some references were added to the house after her death.
For those chasing a more hands-on scare, the Winchester Mystery House also runs a separate three-hour paranormal investigation offering after-hours access to the mansion's reported hot spots, according to the attraction. A second night of that investigation was added for Saturday, March 14 due to popular demand.
Why This Friday the 13th Stands Out
Friday the 13th fell twice earlier in 2026, in February and March, making November 13 the third and final occurrence of the year. That February-March-November pattern is unusual: according to EarthSky, it last happened in 2015 and won't recur until 2037. Years with three Friday the 13ths overall occur 59 times in every 400-year Gregorian calendar cycle, per the same source, making 2026's trio a comparatively rare calendar quirk for San Jose's most famously strange address to lean into.
