A tractor-trailer carrying junked car parts rolled over on I-93, south of Exit 35, in Wilmington, Massachusetts this morning. The ensuing chaos brought the busy interstate to a grinding halt, transforming a Monday morning into a nightmare scenario for commuters and travelers, as reported by NBC Boston.
According to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), the rollover took place around 5:20 a.m., immediately shuttering all southbound lanes and resulting in hours-long traffic delays. Detours were put in place, but drivers were reportedly left languishing in their cars as traffic backed up as much as 8 or 9 miles.1 As the situation unfolded, WCVB reported that aerial footage captured a large debris field sprawled across the highway, further complicating efforts to reopen lanes and alleviate the traffic congestion.
In the aftermath, only one of four lanes were opened by 7:30 a.m., with MassDOT urging drivers to seek alternate routes wherever possible according to NBC Boston. As reported by CBS Boston, it became increasingly evident that the cleanup process would prove to be an extensive one, as the overturned tractor-trailer and its cargo of crushed cars had left a significant mess that required a meticulous and prolonged effort to address.
At the time of writing, no injuries have been reported in connection with the rollover, and no further details surrounding the cause of the incident have been released, as per NBS Boston.
