A horrifying incident unfolded in Andover, Massachusetts, yesterday, September 16, when an Amtrak train collided with a BMW X1, catching the event on a surveillance camera. In an unexpected outcome, only one woman suffered minor injuries and was transported to Lawrence General Hospital, according to NBC Boston.
The accident occurred around 9:20 a.m. at the intersection of Pearson Street and Railroad Street. The video captured the frightening moments as the Amtrak train slammed into the SUV, just as the BMV X1 tried to desperately back away from the tracks. The footage shows the driver crossing the tracks when the arms suddenly begin lowering. In an attempt to evade the oncoming train, the driver reverses but is unable to avoid the collision, as reported NBC Boston.
Neighbors, who witnessed the aftermath but not the actual collision, spoke to local news outlets and expressed their relief on hearing that the driver was not critically injured. They recalled hearing the train honk frantically before the crash and the arrival of police cars on the scene. A statement from The Eagle-Tribune confirmed that no passengers or crew members on the train were injured. As a result of the accident, Amtrak Train 691 faced a delay of approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.
The investigation is currently being carried out by Amtrak Police. It is important to note that another fatal train incident happened in the same vicinity in July, when an 85-year-old Andover man was tragically struck and killed by a train, as mentioned by yet another Eagle-Tribune report.
