
Chicago Police Officer James Mendoza made a remarkable appearance at the recent Bank of America Chicago Marathon on October 10. Mendoza embarked the whole 26.2-mile course wearing his full uniform and 30 pounds of tactical gear. His aim was to recognize the sacrifices of the city's first responders, and to raise support for the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation. This foundation serves to honor fallen and critically injured heroes of the Chicago Police Department.

Mendoza's extraordinary participation in the marathon was noticed by many, including Dean Tatooles, a local attorney and photographer. Tatooles was present to photograph a friend participating in the marathon and was initially surprised to see Mendoza wearing his full police gear.
Capturing the significant moment with his camera, Tatooles offered encouragement to the officer. He later described Mendoza as hardworking in an interview with ABC7 Chicago. Tatooles also shared his exchange with the officer during the race, recounting that Mendoza was giving his best in the race.
Mendoza's effort was lauded by Phil Cline, the Executive Director of the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation. Cline highlighted Mendoza's dedication and acknowledged his noticeable difference in the gear compared to the other runners. Participating in the marathon, Mendoza, along with 80 others, managed to raise over $160,000 for the foundation.
Being a Navy veteran and an enthusiastic runner, Mendoza viewed the marathon as more than an athletic event. Through his effort, Mendoza aimed to shine a light on the dedication and strength of Chicago's first responders.
