A violent assault at Shaw's Candy Store in San Francisco's West Portal neighborhood has led to the pressing of four felonies against 39-year-old Parmjit Singh Janda. Accusations include three counts of felony assault with force likely to commit great bodily injury and one count of felony elder abuse, detailed by the San Francisco District Attorney's Office.
On September 27, Mr. Janda allegedly attacked the store owner who asked him to move from her shop's entrance. An employee and an 80-year-old customer both came to help and were consequently assaulted. A civilian intervened, assisting in the assailant's subduing and subsequent arrest which allowed for his arraignment on September 29.
Brooke Jenkins, the District Attorney, addressed the attack saying, "The senseless assault at our neighborhood candy store in West Portal has injured several people. I'm thankful to the Good Samaritan and others who helped apprehend the alleged assailant before the police's arrival. My office is prepared to push the boundaries in court for our community's justice."
The future of Mr. Janda's case now hangs on the pending court hearing on October 12. The District Attorney’s Office, by withholding bail for Mr. Janda due to the public safety risk he poses, signifies the severe attitude with which the case is being handled. It also reminds the public of the importance of vigilance and their role in public safety.
