Walgreens Union Square Store Joins Growing List of San Francisco Pharmacy ClosuresSource: Google Street View

Another Walgreens store in San Francisco's Union Square will cease operations by next month, marking yet another instance of Bay Area pharmacy closures. The sign near the store entrance announces the store at Powell and Sutter streets will close by 3 p.m. on November 15th, according to SFGate.

This closure adds to an increasing number of pharmacy closures in California. A Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing recently triggered Rite Aid to close 154 stores, including 31 in California. For several years now, Walgreens has been shuttering its Bay Area stores due to retail theft and cost-cutting measures, as per the San Francisco Chronicle.

Walgreens' closures echo the trend of other retail businesses around Union Square, such as Express, Anthropologie, Gap, and CB2 closing shop. The nearest Walgreens to the Union Square location is at 135 Powell St. This store will retain customer prescription records from the closing store, according to a sign posted this week, as reported by SFGate.

Following the announced shutdowns, Walgreens will retain 45 stores in San Francisco according to its website. However, ongoing struggles with losses and thefts may prompt reevaluation of its regional presence.
