Chaos erupted in Chicago's upscale River North neighborhood when brazen hooligans rammed an SUV into a business in a bold attempt to illegally withdraw a money machine, authorities said. The alarming crash took place shortly before the crack of dawn on a sleepy Thursday morning.
The pack of would-be robbers aimed to blatantly break the bank by smashing through the Galleria Market retail storefront, located in the 300 block of West Superior Street. But in their rush to quickly make off with the cash, they struggled to uproot an ATM and eventually abandoned their prize. The chaotic scene unfolded just as the city was to gently stirred awake, around 6:10 a.m., ABC 7 Chicago reported.
In a frantic bid to escape, the suspects reentered the SUV and wheeled away, along with other accomplices in different vehicles, scurrying north on Orleans Street before swerving east down Chicago Avenue. Witnesses watched in disbelief as the vehicles vanished like phantoms into the morning gridlock, leaving behind nothing but the wreckage and an unclaimed ATM.
No bystanders were harmed in the audacious smash-and-grab, and as of late Thursday morning, Chicago's finest had yet to slap cuffs on any of the participants in the heist escapade. "Area Five detectives are investigating," Chicago police stated, diligently sifting through clues while the search intensifies. Meanwhile, a chunk of Superior Street was sandwiched off between Orleans and Sedgwick Street, flooded by the blue and red hues of a substantial police presence, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
