As 2023 heads toward its end, the Galesburg community is setting the stage for the finale of the Sandburg Songbag concert series. The concluding concert on November 12 will be headlined by Dance Hall Doves, a duo known for a pleasing mix of music genres that has won them fans across Illinois. The press release from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources places the event at 313 E. Third Street in Galesburg with a recommended donation of $5 per attendee.
Dance Hall Doves has grown out of local music scene to establish themselves, culminating a unique musical talent. Erin Glasnovich, the Orpheum Theatre director and a musician's daughter, is known for her guitar skills and emotive vocals while Corie "Cow" Weisenberger, Music Makers' representative, previously contributed his talent to Memphis Dives.
The concert series is a tribute to Carl Sandburg—the eminent poet and biographer—and his love for folk music. "Songbag," the name of the concert, is a direct reference to Sandburg's 1927 book, "The American Songbag," which was a collection of American folk songs he compiled and rendered. The Carl Sandburg State Historic Site, inclusive of Sandburg's birthplace, aims at preserving his memories and applauding his influence on American music and literature.
Over its tenure, the Sandburg Songbag concert series successfully inspired music appreciation, keeping Sandburg's legacy alive. With generous funding from the Mark & Celia Godsil Family Fund, the concert has showcased wide-ranging music styles attracting a variety of talents, thus enchanting its audiences. As the 2023 concert series concludes, the intersection of art, music, and history is evident in this evolving homage to Sandburg's cultural impression.
As Galesburg and its neighboring residents anticipate Dance Hall Doves' final act, it is vital to commend the unabating community dedication to preserving culture and art. In this ever-changing media climate, the concert series symbolizes the lasting significance for local communities, to gather, enjoy music and celebrate the inheritances of iconic figures such as Sandburg, thus ensuring inspiration for future generations.
