The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) is all set to host the annual tradition of the mentored archery deer hunt at Kickapoo State Recreation Area in Vermilion County. Running from December 12 through January 7, 2024, the program invites adults and youth to participate in the winter hunting event according to Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR).
The mentored hunt program, tailored to individuals with less than three years of prior deer hunting experience, employs a balanced lottery system. The system intends to split hunting slots equally between youth and adult applicants. The program excludes previously successful applicants and offers four hunting periods, enabling beginner and skilled hunters to benefit from their non-hunting mentors who are 21 or older and licensed to hunt in Illinois.
The significance of the mentor hunt program lies not only in the transfer of hunting knowledge from seasoned hunters but also in fostering a shared responsibility for local deer population control.
At the heart of the mentored hunt program, the vast landscape of the Kickapoo State Recreation Area provides a diverse environment for hunting. Although the program limits hunters to one deer, it nurtures an appreciation for the role of each animal within its ecosystem and the importance of ethical hunting conservation practices.
The IDNR's achievement in developing this program benefits novice hunters with hands-on learning and camaraderie. Program participation includes the personal provision of a mentor and archery equipment, along with a free windshield card issued by the site, which is necessary for all applicants as outlined by the IDNR.
Applications are accepted until 11:59 p.m. on the 27th. Encouraging eligible candidates are welcomed to partake in this transformative hunting experience.
