An 18-year-old has been slapped with a felony theft charge after Chicago Police say he was involved in a high-end heist, nabbing over $200,000 in merchandise from a retail store last month. The suspect, identified as Michael Bibbs of the 6100 block of S. Morgan St., Chicago, was collared by the Chicago Police Department's Organized Retail Crime Task Force with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force, as per a press release.
According to the Chicago Police Department, Bibbs was rounded up on December 18, 2023, just a stone's throw from where he's slated for a detention hearing—the 2600 block of S. California Ave.—just one day before his court date. This arrest stems from an incident that took place on November 13, 2023, when Bibbs and cohorts are said to have waltzed into a retail establishment located in the 0-100 block of East Grand (18th District) and walked out with a bountiful loot of luxury goods valued well into the six-figure range.
Details surrounding the theft and subsequent investigation have been closely guarded, with officials offering no further information beyond Bibbs' arrest and charge of one felony count of theft/unauthorized control amounting to between $100,000 and $500,000.
