Austin ISD is set to revamp its digital landscape with a fresh initiative aimed at amplifying internet coverage for students and neighboring residents, dubbed Project Lighthouse. The district will see the installation of utility poles across various campuses, a move geared to bolster connectivity in areas hitherto grappling with spotty internet service. Those set to first benefit from this program include Akins High, Austin High, and the Liberal Arts and Science Academy, along with a selection of elementary schools, according to KVUE.

The district, which inked a deal with Branch Communications back in 2021 to erect the utility poles, has yet to release a full-blown construction schedule. However, the wheels are expected to be set in motion as early as the tail end of this month, as winter break kicks into gear from December 25–January 5. The game plan encompasses elevating internet access on campuses via monopolies and wireless service towers positioned to deliver enhanced connectivity, as reported by Community Impact

Nearing 30% of the student populace has been up against the tide without access to reliable internet, a hurdle with the potential to knock down academic performance and impede school-family communications, district officials said. Branch Communications enters the picture with its promise to construct said monopoles. The company will lease pole space to mobile carriers for their service enhancements—a strategy that also births revenue for AISD through monthly rental fees, slated to bankroll additional projects improving network access for students, as per Community Impact.
