The Austin Police Department (APD) is still piecing together the events leading to the officer-involved shooting at 1124 Brecon Lane on the morning of December 2, which left one man, Christophe Vanover, injured but in stable condition, the department announced on December 15th.
Officers responded to a 911 call reporting an attempted suicide, finding Mr. Vanover bleeding from evident self-inflicted wounds with a box cutter, a situation that rapidly escalated when Vanover allegedly pointed a firearm at the officers, which led Detective Manuel Delgado-Eberhardt and Officer Robert Mattingly to discharge their weapons after Officer Mattingly's deployed taser was ineffective. The encounter was captured on the officer's body-worn cameras, although the footage has some redactions to preserve the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
Delgado-Eberhardt and Mattingly, who have been with the department for over a decade and nearly six years, respectively, have been placed on administrative leave in line with APD protocol, according to the Austin Police Department.
Mr. Vanover, after being subdued and taken into custody by arriving mental health officers, was transported to a local hospital, where he is currently facing charges of Aggravated Assault on a Public Servant, which is a first-degree felony, as per the Austin Police Department.
