In a string of violent encounters, Facebook Marketplace transactions have turned into armed robberies, the Chicago Police Department warns. Victims attempting to buy a cell phone were instead met with guns and demands in at least four incidents across Chicago's West Side. The perpetrators have been targeting unsuspecting bargain hunters, culminating in a series of daylight thefts that have escalated to chasing down a victim, Chicago authorities say.
The reported robberies occurred at the 5400 block of West Washington Blvd. on November 25, 2023, and thrice at the 3700 block of West Arthington St. on December 2, 3, and 4, according to a community alert from Chicago Police. Victims were lured under the guise of purchasing a smartphone, only to be faced with armed suspects as they approached their meeting spot. One incident escalated, with the offenders chasing the victim away after robbing them at gunpoint.
Descriptions provided by the CPD detail the offenders as African-American males in their mid-20s to mid-30s, varying in height and build. Notable features include a chipped front tooth and a distinct facial tattoo, which could assist citizens and law enforcement in identifying the individuals responsible. The police are urging people to take note of such unique identifiers.
Amidst these alarms, the police have advised avoiding pursuit of fleeing assailants, prioritizing personal safety over property, and the importance of being a vigilant participant in the community's well-being. "Never resist a robbery," the police department cautioned, "value your life over any and all property." In the event of witnessing such crimes, community members are urged to dial 9-1-1 immediately and to not touch anything until police arrive, thereby preserving potential evidence.
