A hit-and-run incident on the West Side of Chicago left a pedestrian dead, and police are now on the hunt for the driver behind the wheel of a red SUV. According to a community alert released by the Chicago Police Department, the vehicle, believed to be a 2011 or newer model Dodge Durango with a sunroof, was traveling westbound on the 4200 block of West Congress Parkway at around 9:35 p.m. on Friday when it struck a pedestrian who was in the roadway.
The force of the collision was such that it caused damage to the front passenger side of the SUV, which then continued to fully drive away without stopping to render assistance or notifying the authorities. Police are actively seeking information about the red SUV and urging anyone with knowledge of the vehicle or the accident to come forward. The alert stresses the need for witnesses to aid in bringing the fleeing driver to justice.
The identity of the victim has not been made public at this time, pending family notification. The Chicago Police Department's Major Accident Investigation Unit is leading the investigation and canvassing the area for surveillance footage that might have captured the incident.
