Sandra Zuniga, former Office of Neighborhood Services Director in San Francisco and ex-girlfriend of the now infamous, then boss, Mohammed Nuru, received three years of probation for money laundering charges related to a City Hall corruption scandal, avoiding jail time. On Thursday, according to SFist, Zuniga avoided a harsher punishment thanks partly to her federal investigation cooperation and her word against involved individuals.
Zuniga, who could have faced 20 years in prison, managed to soften the judge's stance with her previous record and emotional testimony. Her lawyer, Galia Amram, highlighted her susceptibility to Nuru's influence, saying her client was merely following her heart. Judge William Orrick expressed his confidence in her not coming before him again, demonstrating his trust in her rehabilitation.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported Zuniga's apology for the distress her actions caused the community. Notably, her 2018 trip to South America, indulging in luxury at the expense of a city contractor, added to her legal troubles. Nevertheless, Assistant U.S. Attorney David Ward noted Zuniga's minimal personal gain from her crimes.
Paul Giusti, a former Recology executive, was sentenced alongside Zuniga to three years of probation, six months of home detention, and fined $30,000, as stated in SFist. Giusti admitted to directing bribes to Nuru and also supported Nuru's son's employment as a part of his efforts to instill a strong work ethic in the young man.
The recent convictions intertwine within a federal probe into corruption across San Francisco's government, netting over twenty suspects. Developers Siavash "Sia" Tahbazof and Bahman Ghassemzadeh, implicated in the scheme, are poised to plead guilty to conspiracy fraud for their part in the malfeasance.
