Miami Beach kicked off Hanukkah with a menorah lighting ceremony led by Mayor Steven Meiner and city commissioners on Thursday, December 7. The event, held outside the Miami Beach City Hall, began at 4:00 p.m., as officials and residents gathered to celebrate the start of the eight-day Jewish Festival of Lights. Mayor Meiner and the commissioners joined to ignite the first flame of the menorah.

According to a Miami Beach city website publication, Mayor Meiner shared heartfelt words during the lighting ceremony, remarking, "Hanukkah is known as the Jewish Festival of Lights and traditionally is a joyous time for Jewish families to come together,” Mayor Meiner said. “This year, we must remember to also keep the people of Israel in our hearts who won’t be home with their families because of war,” he emphasized the city's solidarity with Israel, as many won't be home to celebrate due to ongoing conflict.

The ceremony marks the beginning of Hanukkah, which will continue until the evening of Friday, December 15.
