Chaos erupted in Miami when shots rang out at a police vehicle Friday evening, leading to a suspect being apprehended after a high-stakes investigation. According to CBS Miami, the gunfire occurred shortly after 5:30 p.m. as Miami and Fort Lauderdale police officers teamed up to respond to reports of an armed robbery in the upscale Miami Design District.
The Fort Lauderdale Police Department reported that their officers had their cruiser shot multiple times by suspects at the scene, which unfolded near 90 NE 39 Street, just outside of the Swan restaurant. One person, potentially linked to the armed robbery, is now in custody following the swift action by law enforcement to track a vehicle matching the description on the Turnpike near Glades Road on Saturday morning, CBS Miami confirmed.
No injuries were reported from the incident, law enforcement officials assured, although the search for any additional suspects continued vigorously. The area was cordoned off, creating a substantial perimeter along North Miami Avenue between 36 and 46 Street. Drivers were cautioned to steer clear of the vicinity to facilitate a thorough investigation.
A witness detailed a harrowing scene to Local 10 News, “He pulled out the gun, cocked it, put it behind his head, and I was just waiting to hear a bang when I figured out that it was a robbery,” recounted Charley Herz. Another bystander, Devien Torres, described the aftermath of the suspects snatching an expensive watch, “When I heard the screaming, I ran over there and it was a woman with her boyfriend or husband saying, ‘They took my stuff.”'
The cooperation between the Miami Police Department and Fort Lauderdale police underscored the severity of the incident. Kiara Delva, a spokeswoman for the Miami Police Department, confirmed to Local 10 News that one suspect believed to be involved in the incident has been detained.
