The festive spirit in South Florida has hit rough waters as severe weather conditions have led to the cancellation and postponement of several popular holiday boat parades this December. In what's proving to be a significant disappointment for both participants and spectators, the NWS and public safety officials have stepped in with advisories that have effectively docked the seasonal celebrations. Originally scheduled for this weekend, the annual Boca Raton Holiday Boat Parade has been scuttled, with no plans to reschedule. Citing "severe weather conditions," the city has put safety before tradition, as reported on their official website.
Similarly, the Fort Lauderdale Seminole Hard Rock Winterfest Boat Parade also waved the white flag, announcing its cancellation with an emotional Lisa Scott-Founds, president and CEO of Winterfest, at the helm of the decision, as she was getting choked up, "It’s the right thing to do," Fort Lauderdale’s fire chief, Stephen Gollan, confirmed in a moment that saw Scott-Founds being hugged, according to an interview with the Yahoo News.
The squally weather, described by the National Weather Service as "unusual for December," has also tossed the Miami Outboard Club's 25th annual Holiday Boat Parade and the Lantana/Lake Worth Beach area's ninth annual Lake Osborne Holiday Boat Parade into uncertain waters, with both events being postponed. The Pompano Beach Boat Parade will attempt to set sail again on the rescheduled date of December 21.
Crowds estimated at 3,000 ticket holders will be touching base with organizers for refunds following Winterfest's cancellation. "A decision we do not take lightly," Bill Walker, chairman of the executive board of directors for Winterfest, emphasized, highlighting the impossibility of postponing due to the intricate dance of permits and logistics. During the postponements, boaters would have faced strong conditions with gusts between 40 and 45 mph, as noted by NWS meteorologist George Rizzuto, who personally advised against braving the waters, given the information obtained by the Yahoo News.
