A tense standoff in Union City escalated yesterday when a deputy from the Alameda County Sheriff's Office was shot during an eviction, putting local law enforcement on high alert. The incident occurred on Dowe Avenue around 1:34 p.m., as deputies served an eviction notice. A suspect inside the residence opened fire, striking a deputy in the process, according to the Union City Police Department.
The injured officer was subsequently rushed to a local hospital for treatment of critical, yet non-life-threatening injuries. Playing out at the 33000 block of Dowe Avenue, the suspect, reportedly still at large and considered armed and dangerous, prompted a significant police response. The Union City area was advised to be avoided by the UCPD, as multiple local agencies are attending to the situation.
Following the shooting, police activity encompassing Alvarado Niles Rd. and Dowe Ave. caused considerable disruption but has since been resolved. The UCPD announced there is no longer a known danger to the public, and their Investigation Unit is continuing to investigate the incident, as indicated in a brief update by the Union City Police Department news report.
Hospitalized after the shooting, the deputy is reported to be in "recovery and in good spirits" following surgery for a gunshot wound, according to the Alameda County Sheriff's Office Facebook page. This latest incident comes as part of a worrying trend involving shots fired during eviction activities by authorities, with a report from Hoodline citing that just the day before, a similar event unfolded during an eviction attempt in East Oakland.
Investigations are expected to continue, seeking to illuminate the sequence of events that led to the eruption of violence in what was a routine civil procedure by the Alameda County Sheriff's Office. Individuals with any information related to the incident are encouraged to come forward and contact the UCPD or local law enforcement, as stated by Sergeant Jean Jimenez in a press release obtained by UCPD.
