Yesterday, an alleged burglar was shot by a homeowner in southwest Atlanta, marking a violent end to an attempted home invasion. According to the FOX 5 Atlanta, the confrontation took place around 3 a.m. on Richardson Street when the suspect tried to enter the homeowner's bedroom. The resident, acting in self-defense, shot the intruder in the stomach.
The wounded man was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital and has since been transferred to a detention center, where he faces burglary charges. The identity of the intruder has not yet been disclosed by authorities. A neighborhood resident, speaking on the condition of anonymity, expressed concern to FOX 5, "You know it was just the holidays, so we have criminals out here trying to get people’s belongings," indicating a heightened sense of vigilance during the holiday season.
Channel 2 Action News reported that when police arrived at the scene, they found the man with a gunshot wound to his chest, and he remains in critical condition. While instances of gunfire are not uncommon in the area, actual home break-ins are more sporadic, stirring unease amongst the residents. One neighbor told FOX 5, "It just let me know to be alert and keep an eye on my surroundings and my kids if people are trying to break into people’s homes over here."
