Henry County is putting $1.63 million behind a fresh round of upgrades at North Mt. Carmel Park, where the playground area is set to get new sidewalks, a low wall for seating and a new restroom building.
The Henry County Board of Commissioners approved the contract Thursday and awarded the work to Ujamaa Construction of Morrow, according to WSB-TV. The project is funded through SPLOST VI and is part of the county’s Comprehensive Parks Master Plan.
North Mt. Carmel Park Is Already A Major Family Hub
The Hampton-area park spans 129 acres and includes Henry County’s largest public playground, 14 soccer fields, a bark park and a paved walking track. The county’s parks information also highlights accessible play equipment, a fitness circuit, an imaginative-play area and a kid-sized roadway for bikes and big wheels.
The work has been moving through the county’s procurement process for months. An official Henry County procurement listing identified the project as construction of North Mt. Carmel Park playground site improvements and a new restroom building.
SPLOST VI Is Funding A Broader Parks Push
North Mt. Carmel’s makeover is one piece of a much larger county parks investment. Henry County’s SPLOST Department lists $20.4 million for Comprehensive Parks Master Plan improvements under SPLOST VI, a six-year program approved by voters in November 2024 and funded through sales-tax collections running from April 2025 through March 2031.
Under the program, Henry County receives 68% of the SPLOST VI collections for county projects, while the remainder is divided among Hampton, Locust Grove, McDonough and Stockbridge. For North Mt. Carmel visitors, the approved scope is focused on practical improvements around the park’s busiest family-use area rather than adding another soccer field or entirely new attraction.
The latest announcement did not include a construction start date or details about whether portions of the playground will close during the work. Those logistics will be the next key piece of information for families, youth sports teams and dog-park users who rely on the 129-acre recreation complex.
