The Anoka-Hennepin School District's School Board kicked off 2024 with a bit of a hitch. In what should have been a standard procedure, the induction of three new board members ended in a stalemate over electing a board chair. Linda Hoekman, Zach Arco, and Michelle Langenfeld were sworn in during the first meeting of the year on Monday night, ready to tackle district issues, according to an official announcement.
However, the routine selection of a board chair hit an impasse when no candidate managed to secure a majority vote among the six members. With all nominations for the board chair position resulting in split decisions, the first meeting took an unexpected turn. As reported by the school district's own update, each time a nomination was made, the vote failed on a split decision.
In response to the deadlock, School Board member Jeff Simon voiced his optimism for future proceedings. "I will not accept that this is a divided board," Simon proclaimed. "This is our first meeting folks right and although this is a little messy and you can say we're divided on board chair...I don't see that we are a three-by-three divided board. I won't accept that, I think we can collaborate, I know we can collaborate," he told attendees, as mentioned in the district's own press release.
Until a chair is elected, duties will be shared among the existing School Board members. Jeff Simon, along with Matt Audette, will guide the preparation of all School Board meeting agendas. Votes for the chair and other officer positions will continue at every board meeting this year, as the group commits to breaking the deadlock. The district reiterated its commitment to continue attempting votes on a chair and other officer positions, ensuring that the board's leadership would be established as soon as consensus is achieved.
