The Atlanta Police Department is in mourning once more as they recently announced the passing of one of their own, Officer Lucas Sizemore. The young officer, who joined the department after graduating from the police academy last May, passed away on January 9 at the age of 24, according to FOX 5 Atlanta. Sizemore's death details have not been disclosed by officials, marking a somber tone for the department which also lost another officer to a "medical emergency" earlier this month.
Remembrances and condolences have been widespread as the city grapples with these losses; Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens offered his sympathies emphasizing the sacrifices police make, saying, “My deepest sympathies are with the family and loved ones of Officer Lucas Sizemore, It’s important to also remember the sacrifices that police officers make every day to keep our communities safe, we ask a lot from our police officers and on behalf of the city of Atlanta, I want to thank them once again for their service to our communities,” as reported by WSB-TV.
Officer Sizemore, a member of Zone 4 Evening Watch, was appreciated for his dedication to service with the Atlanta Police Department expressing their collective heartache in a statement, “During this difficult time, let us come together to remember Officer Sizemore’s commitment and sacrifice, our thoughts and prayers are with Officer Lucas Sizemore’s loved ones during this painful time.” His obituary noted that Sizemore would have celebrated his 25th birthday next month. This series of tragic events for the department also saw the loss of Officer Kenya Galloway, 44, who died on January 4 due to an emergency while in his vehicle at the Atlanta Public Safety Annex.
The Atlanta Police Department is yet to reveal any further details surrounding the unexpected death of Officer Sizemore, the second officer from the department to pass away in January after Officer Galloway, who suffered a medical emergency and was discovered unresponsive before his shift.
