As residents in Atlanta rang in the New Year, they were greeted with a forecast that suggests a grab bag of winter conditions. According to the National Weather Service, New Year's Day itself was partly sunny, eventually giving way to full sunshine with a brisk high near 48 degrees and gusty northwest winds up to 25 mph. Come nightfall, Atlantans need to bundle up as temperatures are set to plummet to a low around 28, with patchy frost likely after 5 a.m.
Those early risers on Tuesday should prepare to quickly scrape away frost before the sun fully rises. Temperatures are expected to rebound slightly to a high near 51 degrees with a calm west wind. However, by Tuesday night, the city will once again be under the influence of cooler temperatures as the mercury dips to about 31 degrees. But there's no need to overly rush to wrap yourself up in layers, as the winds are forecast to be mild, becoming calm come evening.
Midweek, Atlantans should keep their umbrellas close at hand. The National Weather Service projects a 40 percent chance of showers rolling in after 1 p.m. on Wednesday, with temperatures reaching a high near 46 degrees amidst mostly cloudy skies. If the showers hold off, residents might still want to keep their jackets on—the low is expected to linger around 33 degrees Wednesday night, with a continuing chance of rain before 1 a.m.
Heading into Thursday, the skies are set to clear up as Atlanta welcomes back the sun, with a high of near 49 degrees, perfect for those wishing to briefly escape their winter havens. Temperatures at night are predicted to fall again to around 28 degrees. And to wrap up the workweek, Friday promises similar sunny skies with a high pushing near 50, but don't get too complacent—showers are forecast to potentially make a return after 1 a.m., bringing a 50 percent chance of rain and a low around 36.
The weekend outlook looks to serve a mix of precipitation and decent highs in the low 50s. Saturday, in particular, seems to notably come with frequent showers, carrying a 70 percent chance of rain. While the highs cap at near 51, the lows are expected to be substantially more forgiving than the start of the week, hanging around 38 degrees. Following the rainfall, Sunday is projected to offer a break, with partly sunny skies and a high near 50, according to the National Weather Service's extended forecast.
