Early Tuesday morning, the official Austin-Travis County EMS X account faced an unexpected emergency of its own—a digital breach. Hackers seized control of the account, typically used to relay urgent emergency information, and promptly rebranded it to mirror that of a cryptocurrency firm. According to the Austin American-Statesman, the public service's profile got masked with the identity of Dymension, a company linked to blockchain technology.
While the motives behind the cyber intrusion remain unclear, ATCEMS officials were swift to respond and ensure that no lapse in communication would occur. Efforts to swiftly reclaim and secure the compromised account were underway. In the interim, officials redirected the public to Austin EMS's Facebook page for any updates on emergencies and safety advisories. This alternative swiftly served to keep providing crucial information, officials confirmed to FOX 7 Austin.
As of 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, the X account remained under the control of the hackers, with no tweets reflecting the typical content expected from Austin EMS.
A spokesperson from Austin EMS underscored the severity of the situation, assuring the public that they were working diligently to correct the issue. During this digital skirmish, the Austin community is urged to completely disregard any communications emanating from the compromised Twitter account and to instead head directly to their Facebook page for verified updates and alerts. The temporary shift to Facebook will continue to ensure that critical information is still to be effectively disseminated to the public, despite the ongoing breach.
