Blanco residents are gritting their teeth in frustration as they face water woes following a series of water main breaks, spurred on by a deep freeze that has gripped the region. According to FOX San Antonio, crews have been working non-stop, with some residents seeing partial restoration of water services. As the town's tap turns back on, a boil water notice has been issued as a safeguard against potential contamination.
Despite the town's historical resilience, the current cold snap has demonstrated a new level of challenge for Blanco's infrastructure. One local business owner, Al Shacklett, voiced his concern, "Yes, I actually had walked over to city hall earlier this morning and just trying to figure out because I knew across the street they had water, but on this side or the side of the square, there wasn't any water," he told FOX San Antonio. Shacklett's family coffeehouse, a stone's throw from the historic downtown square, symbolizes more than business—it's a century-old family legacy currently parched for the water required to brew their signature cups.
Mayor Mike Arnold reassured residents that the town is on top of the situation. "We have a great team that stays on top of it, and we have a plan in place to replace it all over the coming years," Mayor Arnold said on FOX San Antonio. However, these back-to-back freezes have put added pressure on an aging system, causing the underlying soil and asphalt, saturated and hardened by the cold, to be further compacted by traffic, leading to more breaks.
In Blanco, residents, who have seen their lives disrupted, now grapple with the reality of boil notices as standard protocol when pipe integrity is compromised. A hardy crew worked into the night amidst the freezing mud to restore water. "Right now, our citizens are under a boil notice; that's standard when there is a pipe break," stated Mayor Arnold, echoing a community sentiment of grudging acceptance. Meanwhile, at Buchanan's coffeehouse, they remain anticipatory, hoping the second crew can hasten their work. "I know everybody has their challenges. And you know, I am really very partial to Blanco," Shacklett said. "At the end of the day, it's, you know, we'll sit here, and we'll wait, and hopefully, it'll happen sooner rather than later," as reported by FOX San Antonio.
