A Chandler community is reeling after a double shooting led to the tragic deaths of two young individuals, 17-year-old Briza Reyes and her 21-year-old boyfriend. According to 12News, the incident occurred on November 9 when police were dispatched to a report of gunfire at a city housing apartment complex near Pecos and Arizona Avenue. Upon arrival, officers found both victims with gunshot wounds. Reyes succumbed to her injuries on November 17. The suspects reportedly forced their way into a nearby home, assaulting the homeowner, before being apprehended by police.
One suspect has been identified as 27-year-old Korey William Sandusky Jr., a previously convicted felon who, according to Chandler police, is to quickly stand accused of homicide. 12News has learned that Sandusky faced multiple charges including aggravated assault, first-degree burglary, and illegal weapon possession. The suspect was out on probation with outstanding warrants from Michigan at the time of his arrest. Another suspect, a 28-year-old man, is currently under investigation related to the incident.
In another interview with 12News, the grieving mother, Dalia Reyes spoke poignantly about her daughter, who she revealed was also five weeks pregnant at the time of her death. "He destroyed my life. Every day of my life I’m going to have to live with this and I didn’t do nothing wrong," explained the bereft mother.
In the recent development, the state has offered Sandusky a plea deal, a prospect that has been met with staunch opposition from Reyes. "It’s not fair because the message I’m receiving is you do whatever you want, you confess, show remorse, and we can work out with you," Dalia Reyes told 12News. She has urged the community to rally behind her, seeking support through social media and requesting their presence at an upcoming settlement conference on February 9, or through letters of support sent to her personally.
Reyes continues to advocate tirelessly for the justice she believes her daughter deserves. "All my daughter has now is me. My voice. It's up to me whether she gets justice or not. Nothing is gonna bring my daughter back but I don’t want another family going through the same thing I’ve been through," Reyes emphasized.
