A Spring Hill community is grappling with a chilling scene after a man was found dead and another was hanging from a tree in what appears to be a deadly altercation gone awry. Authorities conducting a wellness check discovered the grim outcome of a dispute fueled by alcohol, resulting in murder and a possible suicide.
Hernando County deputies responded to a home on Elkin Avenue, called upon to hastily investigate after a family member reported 54-year-old William Trudell dead and implicated 24-year-old Dakota Croft in the killing. As reported by CBS12, they arrived to find 33-year-old Dustin McMillan, who initially barred entry before relenting to allow deputies inside, falsely informing them that Croft was not at the location.
What unfolded thereafter was a tableau of horror. As described by the Tampa Bay Times, deputies soon found Croft deceased, hanging from a tree on the property. Subsequent search led to the grim discovery of Trudell's body in a nearby wooded area, with evident drag marks leading there from the side of the home.
During questioning, McMillan admitted to authorities that he and Croft had been drinking prior to the attack on Trudell. He revealed that Croft, who was disgruntled with Trudell for being a "cop caller" and for showing disrespect towards women in the household, conceived a plan to violently ambush him. According to CBS12, the confrontation culminated in Trudell's death in his own garage.
Numerous details emerged in the aftermath—a botched clean-up operation and the finding of Croft's severed ankle monitor among the evidence collected at the scene. Investigators, as noted by CBS12, believe it was after these failed attempts to erase their tracks that Croft went to fatally hang himself. McMillan, now facing a string of serious charges including first-degree murder and tampering with evidence, is being held without bond at the Hernando County Detention Center following his arrest.
