For Dixmoor residents, a Monday morning became more disruptive than usual with multiple water main breaks leading to school closures and a village-wide boil water order. This marks the latest blow to a community repeatedly grappling with aged infrastructure issues. The breaks, one at 141st and Wood Streets required swift action as none of the village's schools had sufficient water pressure, as reported by CBS Chicago.

According to Village President Fitzgerald Roberts, the search for leaks became a personal matter, beginning when he observed his home's low water pressure. "When I got up this morning and turned on the water, I noticed the pressure was down some and that put me in the mode to go search for water breaks," he told WLS. The mayor's morning routine heralded yet another infrastructure struggle for the suburb.

This incident is part of a continuing saga for Dixmoor, with at least six breaks occurring this year alone. Roberts believes that the problems are exacerbated by fluctuating temperatures, with water pressure issues being an all-too-common symptom of the aging pipes.

Despite receiving a $2 million check from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Cook County in April 2022, followed by another $14 million from the state for various improvements, Roberts has emphasized that the efforts are far from sufficient. "It won't be enough to complete the mains that's breaking out here," he said in a statement obtained by CBS Chicago. Plans are in place to use upcoming funding of around $16 million for further repairs, yet the village president estimates that a staggering $50 million is required to fully renew their water mains.

Roberts has been candid about the challenges facing Dixmoor, acknowledging that the village's century-old infrastructure has reached a critical point of necessary replacement.
