Eden Prairie is calling on its residents to step up and shape the city's future, as the city is currently recruiting for its six advisory commissions, according to a recent report from its official website. If you've got insight on anything from airport operations to sustainability, the city wants you to apply by Feb. 5.

The opportunities include positions on commissions such as Flying Cloud Airport Advisory, Heritage Preservation, Human Rights and Diversity, Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources, Planning, and Sustainability. Not only do these bodies have a say in city affairs, but they also play an advisory role to the Eden Prairie City Council.

Eden Prairie's youth also have a chance to make their mark through the "Words in Action" contest. Celebrating Black History Month, students in grades K-12 can submit their entries by Feb. 5, for a shot at being recognized by the City Council and winning cash prizes, funded by the generous support of the Eden Prairie Community Foundation.

Meanwhile, the Eden Prairie Police Department is bridging the gap between law enforcement and residents. They're hosting a "Coffee with a Cop" event on Jan. 30 at Godavari Indian Restaurant, where free coffee and treats await, pies of the culturally enriching interactions between the police and the community.

The city is using an eco-friendly mix called Beet Heet to lower the melting temperature of ice, enabling reduced chloride use. This winter has seen Eden Prairie deploying their well-coordinated plow operations skillfully, despite only having 5 inches of snow compared to last year's 52 inches at the same time.

Additionally, Eden Prairie has recognized the diligent work of Shaun Sullivan, who, after over 25 years of service, has been promoted to facilities coordinator within the city's staffing structure.

For those interested in local government proceedings, upcoming meetings include the Parks, Recreation, and Natural Resources Commission on Feb. 5 and the City Council on Feb. 6, both open to public attendance and participation in the decision-making processes impacting Eden Prairie.
