A Fulton County Jail inmate's death raised alarm after he was discovered unresponsive in his cell and later pronounced dead at a local hospital. The inmate, 36-year-old Michael Anthony Holland, was found early in the morning on January 10th by jail staff conducting routine checks, as told by the Fulton County Sheriff's Office.
Holland's dire situation prompted immediate resuscitation attempts before he was swiftly transported to Grady Memorial Hospital. The medical professionals at Grady pronounced him deceased. Before his untimely demise, Holland was being held on a $55,000 bond for aggravated assault against a law enforcement officer and obstruction charges, according to FOX5 Atlanta.
In 2023 alone, the Fulton County Jail became the final holding place for 10 inmates who died while in custody. The pattern of deaths in the facility drew the eyes of federal oversight, as the U.S. Department of Justice commenced a thorough civil probe in July of the same year, scrutinizing conditions and use of force amongst other concerns, Atlanta News First reported.
The Atlanta Police Department has taken the reins to unearth what transpired in Holland’s final hours, while the Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office is slated to perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
