A man has been nabbed for the fatal shooting that occurred at a Gainesville Motel 6, the local police department confirmed. The alleged gunman, 47-year-old Corey Maurice Rucker, stands accused of multiple counts, including felony murder after the January 19 incident.
According to FOX 5 Atlanta, police received reports of a shooting at around 2:30 p.m. at the motel, where they found Destyn Rashad Alexander, 34, with gunshot wounds. Alexander was rushed to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where, he succumbed to his injuries. Rucker was captured by authorities the next day at a different motel in DeKalb County after a coordinated operation involving multiple law enforcement agencies.
Rucker, a Gainesville resident, now faces a slew of charges that, include aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and theft of a motor vehicle. He is currently being held in the Hall County Jail, as per jail records.
Gainesville Police Chief Jay Parrish expressed his gratitude to the assisting agencies in their swift response to bring Rucker into custody. "We would like to thank our local, state, and federal partners who worked tirelessly through the night to apprehend this violent suspect," Parrish was quoted in 11Alive.
The police chief also addressed the impact of the tragic event on the victim's family, stating, "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Mr. Alexander, and it is our hope that this arrest will help bring them a sense of closure as they mourn the loss of their loved one." The circumstances leading up to the shooting have not been disclosed by the police.
