In Gilbert, Arizona, town councilmembers are pushing for the creation of a subcommittee to deal with the rise in teen violence in response to a string of assaults allegedly linked to a group known as the "Gilbert Goons." Councilmembers Scott Anderson, Chuck Bongiovanni and Jim Torgeson proposed the subcommittee in an effort to address the public's growing fears and curb the troubling spike in violent incidents involving teens.
Recent assaults, including an aggravated robbery last August and the death of 16-year-old Preston Lord at a Queen Creek Halloween bash, have shaken the community and prompted a reopening of closed assault cases by local police. According to FOX 10 Phoenix, Gilbert Police are collaborating with neighboring law enforcement agencies to thoroughly review cases from the past two years to find any potential connections.
"The fact of the matter is a lot of public is extremely concerned, and it needs to be addressed," Torgeson told FOX 10 Phoenix. Meanwhile, victims' families, like that of Richard Kuehner's son, who was assaulted and had to flee the country for safety, await justice. "It’s great that they wanted to do this, but in my opinion, just a little too late," Kuehner lamented in the same interview.
Along with the promise of accountability and transparency, councilmembers emphasize the importance of defining the scope of the issue. "Personally I want to look into the scope of teenage violence in Gilbert" Bongiovanni told 12News. Victim advocates also underscore the urgency of the situation. "Any movement in a forward direction to make sure we’re looking at the data and responding and have directive outcomes is great," said Katey McPherson, a mother and advocate for victims of teen violence, as reported by FOX 10 Phoenix.
The proposal for the subcommittee will be discussed at the upcoming Gilbert Town Council meeting. The councilmembers aim to ensure that every resident who has been touched by these troubling events feels heard and that misinformation surrounding these violent events is debunked. The meeting is scheduled for the coming Tuesday night, providing a platform for further community engagement on this critical issue.
