The Gilbert community has been grappling with a surge in teen violence, shedding light on an unsettling trend of crimes among young people in Arizona. Local police departments and families are struggling to cope with the aftermath of these incidents, especially poignant in the wake of Preston Lord's death, which has become a tragic emblem of this broader issue. According to FOX 10 Phoenix, Gilbert Police Chief Michael Soelberg expressed on Jan. 18 that significant investigative efforts are ongoing behind-the-scenes in a bid to deal with the increasing teen-on-teen violence.

In discussing recent crime statistics, Chief Soelberg has pointed out the disconcerting rise in violent offenses amidst an overall decrease in crime. Despite only making up 0.07% of their total calls, incidents involving teen violence have surged from 2022 to 2023,  Soelberg's briefing. The town has seen 22 arrests connected to teen violence over the past two years – 13 arrests were made prior to Lord's death.

The situation was set into stark relief following the assault on Oct. 28, 2023, that led to Lord's untimely demise in Queen Creek, another community equally affected by the rampant issue. Preston was assaulted at a Halloween party, and although CPR was administered on the spot, the boy succumbed to a severe brain injury two days later, according to his aunt Melissa Lord in FOX 10 Phoenix. As Queen Creek Police continued to pursue leads aggressively, the FBI stepped in to assist with the investigation.

As this string of violence undoes the fabric of peace in these Arizona towns, Queen Creek Police Chief Randy Brice has vowed to find justice for Preston, promising that the force’s focus extends beyond mere arrests to securing convictions of the responsible parties. Furthermore, the tragic circumstances surrounding the loss of Preston were aired in a Chandler City Council meeting, where his stepmother, Melissa Ciconte, stressed the need to prevent another family from enduring such grief.
