Gwinnett County Police were called to The Views apartment complex on the 2300 block of Country Walk in Snellville on Tuesday after a report of an armed man threatening to end his own life. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the man, later identified as Martavious Crawley, reportedly opened fire on the officers who were attempting to defuse the situation, which led to police returning fire and injuring him.
The confrontation began shortly after 2 a.m. when a woman's 911 call prompted the police response. Crawley was then engaged by officers who spent approximately 20 minutes trying to calmly resolve the crisis before the shots were exchanged. Medics quickly transported Crawley to the hospital, where he is expected to recover enough to eventually face charges including four counts of aggravated assault of a peace officer, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.
As a result of the incident, no police officers sustained injuries. The Gwinnett County Police Department's Deadly Force Investigation Team is now to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the use of force. The investigation continues as authorities seek to understand why Crawley allegedly decided to quickly use his weapon against law enforcement personnel.
In the wake of the shooting, the area around the complex was secured, with parts of the property roped off with crime scene tape. Atlanta News First noted a heavy police and Crime Scene Investigation presence at the scene through the morning. The name of the involved officers has not been released at this time, and updates are pending as the investigation by Gwinnett Police Department unfolds.
