A manhunt is underway in Sandy Springs after a man fled a high-speed chase that started in Cobb County and ended in a dramatic crash. According to FOX 5, the chase began earlier today, when a DUI Task Force officer noticed a vehicle driving with its lights off. The pursuit escalated quickly as the man tore onto Interstate 75, sparking a pursuit involving the Georgia State Patrol and Sandy Springs Police.
The chase continued, leading the suspect through multiple jurisdictions before he crashed into a pole on Mount Vernon Highway near Northside Drive. After the wreck, wearing a black hoodie, the man reportedly hightailed it on foot, eluding capture. The street was cordoned off by authorities who investigated the scene, and, as of now, no description of the driver has been provided beyond his attire, nor has his identity been revealed.
In a separate account, Atlanta News First reports that the chase originated in Whitfield County and wound its way into the northern reaches of Fulton County where it reached its destructive conclusion. While police have not disclosed what exactly sparked the chase, they have emphasized that the suspect is not believed to be armed.
The repercussions of the incident extend beyond the immediate police deployment, as Georgia Power crews descended on the intersection of Northside Drive at Mount Vernon Highway and Powers Ferry Road to replace the damaged pole and restore service. With 104 homes and businesses left without power and Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School forced to close early due to the outage, the crash has proven disruptful to the daily rhythm of the Sandy Springs community.
