Midtown Atlanta hotels are grappling with a spate of car break-ins that have hoteliers like David Ragland worried about the impact on business. According to a FOX 5 report, surveillance footage from one hotel captured a group of four teenagers breaking into vehicles over the past weekend. Ragland, a hotel manager in the area, is concerned about the unwelcoming atmosphere these incidents might create for newcomers to the city."We saw that a guest came and told us his car had been broken into, and after we looked back at our video on security cameras, we saw that there were four young teenagers roaming around and actually saw them during the break-in," Ragland lamented,
Ragland, who delineated the recent security measures including locked gates that were forcibly split by the intruders, was quoted by FOX 5 stating, "You hear about it throughout midtown and throughout the city of Atlanta a lot," Moreover, the thieves had not taken anything from the cars, which led Ragland to believe they were likely looking for firearms.
Despite a decrease in violent crime in 2023, car break-ins remain a persistent issue in Atlanta, often perpetrated by criminals on the hunt for guns. The startling number of approximately 1,200 firearms reported stolen last year by the Atlanta Police Department.
The Atlanta Police Department is keen to apprehend the culprits and has called for the public's assistance in identifying the youths captured on camera. To prevent future incidents, Ragland and his peers are taking additional steps to safeguard their guests and their property and urge anyone with information to contact the Atlanta Police Department or Crime Stoppers Atlanta. "Even if you have one incident, people will look at it and say, ‘Oh, that hotel is unsafe,'" he said, according to FOX 5.
