Ernell Shaw, a 47-year-old repeat offender from Ft. Lauderdale, has been slapped with a hefty 25-year federal prison stint after his latest run-in with the law, U.S. District Judge Roy K. Altman ruled on Jan. 12. The Armed Career Criminal was busted for possession of a stolen firearm and ammunition, adding another chapter to his extensive rap sheet of violence and crime, according to officials.
Details from the Broward Sheriff’s Office revealed that Shaw was stopped for numerous traffic violations on March 8, 2022, in Lauderhill, Florida. The discovery of the loaded Sig Sauer .380 caliber gun, spare ammunition and narcotics followed by an order to vacate the vehicle led to his downfall. Shaw's prior brushes with the law include twenty-eight arrests and nine convictions, featuring armed robberies and an aggravated battery, all with a firearm, stated U.S. Attorney Markenzy Lapointe for the Southern District of Florida.
This clampdown is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a crackdown effort to cut down violent crime through collaboration between law enforcement at all levels along with the communities they serve. The program, revitalized in 2017, prioritizes rooting out violent offenders by forging local strategies that engage U.S community in the crime-fighting process.
Backing the sentence, Special Agent in Charge Christopher A. Robinson of ATF's Miami Field Division along with BSO Sheriff Gregory Tony, emphasized the commitment to keeping streets safe from hardened criminals like Shaw. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Marc Anton and Assistant U.S. Attorney Darren Grove is on deck for asset forfeiture.
