Commuters using the Richmond/San Rafael Bridge should brace themselves for potential delays as Caltrans rolls out necessary repairs to tackle significant pothole damage. Starting January 5th, the bridge has been subject to nightly lane closures on Eastbound and Westbound Interstate 580. According to Hoodline, closures first impacted the eastbound direction near Pier 21 last week, but the work is far from over.

For those driving east, expect to find two left lanes on Eastbound I-580 to be closed starting from 7 p.m. until 5 a.m. every night through Thursday, Jan. 11. Motorists headed west will also need to prepare for disruptions as the right lane on Westbound I-580 is planned to be closed on Thursday, Jan. 11, during the same hours. Calendar those detours because those lanes will quickly be out of service as Caltrans aims to patch up the bridge and ensure its long-term structural safety.

Bicycle commuters aren't forgotten in the midst of this. Although the bike lane on the bridge will be off-limits during construction hours, a shutter service has been implemented to help cyclists get across. Caltrans District 4 advised that pickup and drop-off stations for this service will be available at each end of the bridge, ensuring that those who prefer their two-wheeled transport can still navigate the disruption.

"Changeable message signs in the area will been activated to assist motorists," said Caltrans in a statement obtained by Caltrans District 4. Traffic delays are anticipated, so planning your journeys with this in mind during the affected evenings is recommended.
