A spree of vandalism at BASIS Scottsdale Charter School has left a significant number of windows shattered, and authorities are scrambling to identify those responsible. According to ABC15, surveillance footage captured two kids wreaking havoc on the Scottsdale educational institution this past Sunday, engaging in a destructive 90-minute rampage that resulted in nearly 30 windows being smashed with rocks.
Scottsdale Police were summoned to the scene around 1 p.m. on Monday, only to discover a swath of devastation—broken glass scattered both inside and outside of the school's buildings, students of the Scottsdale charter consequently upended, some having to stay home the following day as makeshift board-ups took the place of their former learning spaces all while mid-year exams loomed threateningly close for the middle schoolers. "It's going to be quite extensive, window replacement, us coming out here cleaning it, blocking it all off and everything, so it's going to be pretty pricey," Patrick Goble of Sunshine Restoration told ABC15 in response to the extensive damages.
Faculty and administrators are at a standstill, exasperated by a string of similar incidents in the recent past—December 2022 and March 2023 saw this plot unfold before and now, the BASIS Scottsdale community stands victim once again; this latest incident inflicting more damage than the previous occurrences as reported by FOX10 Phoenix. Tyler Garvey, the Head of School at BASIS Scottsdale, told ABC15, "We believe it's the same two students, two kids that have done this."
No arrests have been made yet despite the ongoing investigation, the culprits rode away on black e-bikes anonymizing themselves with nondescript helmets and clothing, weaving through the urban landscape as easily as they shattered the sanctity of educational grounds, however, Scottsdale police are actively pursuing leads, bolstered by evidence collected at the scene. School representatives are reaching out to neighboring schools to share surveillance photos in hopes that staff elsewhere might recognize the young delinquents. The school's intent, as they knit back together the fabric of their daily operations, is clear—to prevent future crimes and seek justice for the disregard shown to their place of learning and growth.
