An early morning dispute at a Mesa McDonald's drive-thru turned deadly this past Saturday, when 23-year-old Daniel Betker was shot and later pronounced dead at a local hospital. As reported by azfamily.com, Mesa police were called to the scene near Southern Avenue and Country Club Drive following the incident, which occurred approximately at 3 a.m.
Witnesses at the fast-food restaurant observed two groups becoming embroiled in an altercation, a conflict that horrifyingly culminated in gunfire. Despite initial efforts by police to render aid, Betker's injuries were fatal. The search for a suspect initially came up empty, with no suspects immediately arrested following the shooting.
However, a development in the case came just a day later. According to FOX 10 Phoenix, the Mesa Police Department announced the arrest of 26-year-old Carlos Heard II on Jan. 14 in connection to the shooting. Heard faces charges including second-degree murder, endangerment, and disorderly conduct/reckless discharge.
"Officers spoke to several witnesses and utilized video surveillance from the surrounding area to identify a potential lead on the described suspect vehicle, a black Hyundai Elantra. They located the vehicle on surveillance video and obtained a license plate, which identified 26-year-old Carlos Heard II as the registered owner. Heard II matched the suspect description provided by witnesses at the scene of the shooting," the Mesa Police statement was obtained by FOX 10 Phoenix.
Shawnette Hanson, the mother of the victim, described her son as "such a loving son,” expressing her disbelief and profound loss during a FOX 10 Phoenix interview. Heard's vehicle was later found at a Mesa apartment complex, where subsequent search warrants for his car and apartment were executed and a gun was discovered, adding to the evidence in the investigation. The community and Hanson now await justice for a tragedy that has left permanent scars.
