Tragedy struck on two separate occasions this week as vehicle crashes in Georgia claimed the lives of two teenagers each, with several others sustaining serious injuries. In a late-night incident on Interstate 675, DeKalb County Police Department responded around 11:05 p.m. to a crash where they discovered a car had veered off the road and hit several trees, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta. Two male teenagers, ages 17 and 12, were pronounced dead at the scene and another 14-year-old male was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The second accident occurred in Cherokee County on Towne Lake Parkway near Towne Lake Hills East, where a Mazda 6 carrying five passengers struck a tree. The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office, arriving at 8:17 p.m., told Atlanta News First that they were deeply saddened by this crash. The victims were identified as 17-year-old Gabriel Escandon and 18-year-old Esteban Cortez-Rendon. Other passengers included another 17-year-old male seriously injured, a 17-year-old driver, and an 18-year-old, all sustaining serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
While investigations are still ongoing for both crashes, authorities have yet to officially identify the victims from the I-675 incident. Conversely, information regarding the deceased and injured parties in the Cherokee County accident has been released, although rumors about their affiliations to local schools circulated heavily online, eventually clarified by statements from community members.
Reflecting on the Cherokee County crash, local resident Olivia Heck, witnessing the aftermath of the collision, told Atlanta News First, "It is incredibly tragic and sad, especially that one car had so many kids in it and I think it’s just important for us to take this and remember to be careful when we’re driving and pay attention, even though we might be having fun with our friends." Authorities suggested that speed was a contributing factor in the crash, with investigations by the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office Traffic Enforcement Unit still in progress.
