The legal disputes arising from a fatal shooting on the premises of the University of Arizona have been resolved, reaching a monetary settlement with the family of the fallen professor and committing to future security improvements. FOX 10 Phoenix reported the university's statement on January 9, revealing the deal includes "non-monetary commitments that affirm the university's continuing support for the well-being of those most affected by these events, and that provide the family with a voice in the university's planning and implementation of measures designed to improve the safety and security of the university community."
Professor Thomas Meixner's life met a tragic end within the walls of the Harshbarger building in October 2022, when he was gunned down by a former student barred from the university's Tucson campus he was shot. Murad Dervish, the suspected assailant, stood accused of an array of charges including aggravated assault and possession of a deadly weapon by a prohibited possessor after a criminal complaint revealed that Dervish, previously expelled and prohibited from university property, was the subject of multiple harassment and threat complaints from university staff.
FOX 10 Phoenix outlines that attempts by campus police to charge Dervish before the slaying were stifled by county prosecutors, who claimed there wasn't enough evidence to support charges of threats or intimidation despite the circulated warnings to staff members.
March 2023 saw the university take steps towards amending the fissures in their safety protocols, releasing a report from an independent security company that encompassed 33 recommendations, with measures including the installation of compliant locks on classroom doors and mandating automatic registrations for UAlerts, the university-heralded emergency communications system, delivering swift notifications during critical campus situations.
