Urban Putt's Mission District Location Closes After 10 Years, Makes Way for Holey Moley's San Francisco DebutSource: Danielle G. via Yelp

After a decade-long run, the fun and games are over for Urban Putt in the Mission District, but don't put your putters away just yet. The mini-golf hotspot known for its Instagram-worthy spaces and spirited libations officially closed its doors on December 30, according to SFist. But filling the void, an Australian company, Funlab, is set to open Holey Moley, a new concept in festive putting, promising an early 2024 debut in the same locale.

Steve Fox, the former CNet and PC World editor who brought Urban Putt to life, expressed his emotions over the closure. "I was there that last night that we closed. I walked around the course, looked at things and my heart was quite heavy," Fox told Mission Local. "It’s heart-breaking." However, fans of his mini golf innovation won't be without for long, as Fox is taking his putter to San Jose with a new Urban Putt location announcing a late January 2024 opening.

Embracing a torch-passing rather than a torching of the bridges, the mantle at the Mission District space will be taken up by the wildly popular Holey Moley brand. Renowned for transforming the run-of-the-mill putt-putt experience into a multi-sensory exploration, Holey Moley is gearing up to serve a fresh take on the game. In a Facebook post, the Urban Putt team shared their thanks to the dedicated fans and the team that made their vision a reality since 2014.

While the details of the new Holey Moley outfit are yet to be fully disclosed, the brand already stirred the pot with an announcement back in May 2023 of taking over the Urban Putt locations in both Denver and San Francisco. As current staff members are expected to stay on board, continuity for the customer experience is a hole-in-one. For those interested in the up-and-coming attraction, an existing web page for the San Francisco Holey Moley, complete with an email list signup, awaits eager mini-golf aficionados.

And, for those who may fear a mini-golf drought in the city, fear not. The green is still flowing at South of Market’s Stagecoach Greens and Subpar Miniature Golf at Ghirardelli Square, ensuring that San Francisco remains on the leaderboard for urbanites seeking a slice of whimsy wrapped in a hole-in-fun.
