Alameda's finest made a smooth bust of a pair of thieves, recovering stolen goods and a vehicle thanks to the watchful electronic eye of a license plate reader. On February 13, near South Shore Shopping Center, a notification of a hot car lit up the police screens—it turns out it wasn't just parked, it was parked and ready for police recovery, as reported by the Alameda Police Department's recent social media update.
The car, which turned out to be stolen, was found empty, but a swift investigation linked it to a duo intent on lightening the loads of local businesses. As officers dug in, these two realized the gig was up, and with packages in tow that didn't belong to them, they hightailed it from the scene before the cops intervened and detained them a short while later. One of these culprits was an Alameda native, the other from Oakland.
This incident, which wrapped up with a neat bow as the taken vehicle and pilfered parcels were returned to their rightful owners, the culprits found themselves cuffed for multiple offenses, demonstrating the effectiveness of the license plate recognition tech that gave the thieves away, according to the Alameda Police Department's Facebook post.
